This movie was marketed as a comedy, and it is not funny at all. It is more of a drama, yet it is not compelling enough to be a drama either. Will Ferrell looks bored and disinterested in this role. Julia Louis-Dreyfus has some decent acting moments, but not near enough to lift this movie from the bottom of the trash heap. I like bad movies, but this isn't even an enjoyable bad movie. It is so bland and has no redeeming qualities. All of the talent here is wasted. All of the characters are unlikable. You can feel a little sympathy for Louis-Dreyfuss' character, but not much. The reason for this is because the beginning of the movie starts with her being a bit of a bully to Ferrell's character, Pete, and really in control of the marriage. Then when the avalanche happens in the middle of their skiing trip, we are supposed to feel like Pete deserted his family and is a bad guy, but the set-up before made it seem like he just wants out of a toxic relationship. had he been set-up as the jerk in the relationship before, we would feel more sympathetic towards Billie because it would give her a chance to get out of the relationship. It just doesn't flow like it should and we are left without any characters to cheer on. Even the kids are boring and super forgettable. Miranda Otto plays an over-the-top Austrian woman that seems more like a caricature of one rather than a believable one. The dialogue is so by-the-book and unoriginal. No favors were given to the actors from the writers. I haven't seen the 2014 Swedish movie that this is a remake of, but I hear it is actually a good movie. It is a shame that this American remake is so bad. The opening scene of this movie shows the main family struggling to take a family photo, and it all goes downhill from there (crappy pun intended). Overall I give this movie a 2/10.
