Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman fit their respective roles well, but that doesn't save this movie from having too many failed opportunities. Perhaps if the movie relied more on the charisma and funny personalities of it's main stars rather than slapstick, it would have fared better. There are some humorous moments though. The characters are not overly likable to begin with, but McCarthy and Bateman do their best to make them appealing. They few funny jokes make this a comedy that's not completely a waste. The premise of the movie is fun, but the story goes on to involve too much and make it overstuffed. I wouldn't say it's a failed comedy, but there are definitely better ones out there, With this being said, "Identity Thief" is a guilty pleasure movie. It is one that should not be thought about hard and is best watched when sick on a rainy day. If you are a Bateman and McCarthy fan, there is a stronger possibility of liking this film otherwise, probably a movie to skip. Overall, I give this movie a 5.5/10.
