"The Force Awakens" is probably the most hyped I have ever been for a movie release. I was in fourth grade when "Revenge of the Sith" was released, so "The Force Awakens was my first Star Wars theatrical experience. Before the movie started (I went to the premiere at a local theater) there was a wookiee noise competition and I won! I geeked out and wore my Star Wars shirt and had binge watched all of the other six episodes leading up to that night. Walking out of the theater, I was on a major high. I was so stoked to have seen Star Wars on the big screen again! However, the more I let the movie settle in my mind, and upon rewatches, the more problems I find. I am not saying that this is a bad movie by any stretch! I actually think this is the best installment in the sequel trilogy and a rather good movie. This past May the fourth, I decided to give "The Force Awakens" another watch, and through the first 2/3rds, I loved it. Then, as soon as Rey uses a Jedi mind trick on a stormtrooper, the movie begins to run off the rails. You can even make the case that it falls off once Starkiller base is revealed, which may very well be accurate. This movie is fun, action-packed and opens up the Star Wars universe to new characters and brings back many familiar faces. However, there is the major flaw which is that it is way too similar to "A New Hope." JJ Abrams is clearly going for a nostalgia-filled ride and he does so by nearly copying the original Star Wars film. Putting that aside, this installment resorted back to using more practical effects for the aliens and I think that was a very good choice. It makes the alines feel more Star Wars-y. The film's first 2/3rds, although obnoxiously similar to "A New Hope" are very, very entertaining and well done. If the movie carried on like it starts, it would be a solid 9/10, but the last 30ish minutes happen and nearly destroy this movie. The movie has good dialogue and acting throughout its runtime, however the story and writing towards the end gets really stale and is kind of eye roll inducing. This movie has a lot of good going for it. It just has some bad qualities and is not original at all. Overall, I give this movie a 7/10.
