This film is neither ground-breaking nor complacent. It has some rather intense moments and others that feel like they are taken out of a Sharknado movie. The cinematography is ambitious. This is evidenced by a plethora of pretty underwater shots and the like. Blake Lively's performance is very solid. The dialogue between characters (of which is sparse) is subpar to say the least. Additionally, most of the CGI feels similar to a glorified B-movie, which is not a compliment to a film with as much ambition as this one. The thing with shark films is that they will forever be compared to Jaws. Compared to Jaws, this film is nothing special. Compared to the abundance of shark flicks out there, The Shallows is above most of them. Overall I would give this film a 6.5/10 because it has moments of great suspense and convincing action, however lazy dialogue and subpar effects hold this movie back.
