To be honest, I was sceptical when I first saw this movie's trailer. It looked like another over the top, non-scary horror movie. However, I was pleasantly surprised at this movie's quality. The movie is about Grace (Samara Weaving) who is marrying into a very wealthy family. On her wedding night, she needs to participate in a family initiation by playing a game at midnight. Instead of drawing something innocent, she happens to draw "Hide and Seek" and this is the worst thing she could have drawn. The family then tries to hunt her down and perform a ritualistic sacrifice on her. Yes, it takes a very dark turn. This premise is whacky, but the way it folds out it fun. We are told piece by piece how the family is cursed with fortune. They have essentially sold their souls to the devil for wealth and have to perform sacrifices of goats or people and the mechanism for determining whether a person is offered is by a possessed box from which a card is drawn. If the family is unable to complete the task of sacrificing Grace by dawn, they may face serious consequences. this movie could have been absolutely awful. However, the dark humor throughout is great. It is seriously twisted humor but it is still funny. The acting is solid from the whole cast. Weaving does great in the leading role. When this movie buckles down to be intense, it does so very effectively. It feels like a mysterious thriller movie and it keeps you on the edge of your seat. The ending feels satisfying. This movie does not hold back on blood, there is a lot of blood, but it is not "Saw" levels of gore. This is an effective and entertaining piece of film. It has a brief runtime, and quick pace, so there is little to no fluff. I do think they could have added more to the runtime by showing some moments rather than explain them away with exposition. Overall, I give this movie a 7.5/10.
