"I Can Only Imagine" is a film that shows the real life story of singer/songwriter, Bart Millard from the Christian band, MercyMe. J. Michael Finley makes his acting debut in the lead role, and his performance is strongly supported by a very good Dennis Quaid performance. Quaid plays Millard's abusive father and does a great job. Through the strong performances, there is a very heartfelt and inspirational story. Although, the story is victim to Hollywood clichés, it is still very well done. This movie may impact Christian viewers the most, but even for non-Christians it will still have an impact. As far as faith-based films go, this is not as preachy and shows improved storytelling conventions compared to similar films in the genre. The messages of forgiveness and finding faith in God are heartwarming and emotional. This film does a lot of things right and gives the titular song a whole lot more meaning and symbolism. Overall, I give this movie a 7.5/10.
