Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway make an unconventional movie duo, but they manage to have great chemistry in this Nancy Meyers film. The Intern starts off like it will be a comedy, but becomes more and more like drama as the film progresses. This "dramedy" has charm, but is very slow moving. Had it been able to condense it's story by about 15 minutes, it would be better capable of keeping the audience engaged. The comedic moments feel clumped up in the first half, while the second half becomes a more serious drama. Had this film spread the comedic moments throughout more evenly it would have benefitted greatly. However, the dialogue in this film is smart and charming. Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway both have really fine performances. When the drama begins to thicken, the actors are able to convey their characters thoughts and emotions very effectively. If there is a movie you want to watch with you family that is a low-stakes film, The Intern is a solid selection. The humor is subtle and the drama is not over the top. The film keeps it's elements in a real scope that makes it believable. Overall, I give this film a 6/10.
