The Great Outdoors was a family-favorite for me when I was growing up. We had a cabin in the forest by a reservoir about an hour away from my hometown. We would watch this film almost every time we visited the cabin during my youth. Watching this movie a few years later was a different experience. The two male leads of John Candy and Dan Aykroyd fall short of what could have been a dynamic duo. The film overall is a silly film, which is what I think creator John Hughes was trying to do...hopefully. This movie is not a total train-wreck though, it does deliver some genuinely funny moments. The forced teen romance is a Hughes staple, so that can get a pass, even though it was mostly a time filling side plot. This film is not the worst, but it is far from the best. I find it enjoyable to watch every once in a while. Overall, I would give this film a 5.5/10. Decent but not great, more like "The Decent Outdoors". badum tss!
