Lady Bird is elevated by strong performances by Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf. This coming of age story is relatable for anyone who has been in high school in the last 25 years. Ronan portrays the dramas and struggles of high schoolers exquisitely while Metcalf encapsulates the struggling parent compellingly. The characters are well developed and we are able to feel all the pain, frustration, and happiness that they feel. This is because we are able to connect with them. Whether it is because we can personally identify with them or know someone like them, we connect. The story of the film is your typical coming of age story and has a "Gilmore Girls" feel to it. However, it takes the sappiness of that genre and makes it into a compelling drama. The comedic effect this film aims for can come across as dull rather than funny, but these moments are sparse and the fil's goal is not to be a gut-busting comedy, so it is passable. Overall this is a good film. I give it a 7.5/10.
