John C. Reilly does a good job in this comedic role, but the movie doesn't rise to its potential and it feels dragged out. The music is great. Reilly has a good voice and it is put to great use here. There are some decent gags and jokes, but for every joke that lands there is another that does not. The script is fairly basic, there's no real great one-liners or anything. There is a character arc for the titular character, but nothing that isn't predictable. There is a plethora of fun comedic actors in this movie, but sometimes the actors and characters they play are just weird and feel like a forced cameo, like the whole Beatles band being played by Jack Black, Paul Rudd, Justin Long, and Jason Schwartzman is just weird. This movie is clearly a satire on the Johnny Cash biopic "Walk the Line" and it is the quality of a satirical film. It is not a great comedy, but it is not the worst either. If you missed it, no worries. Overall, I give this movie a 5.5/10.
